Donating Books and Materials
Your collection has nourished your intellect and enriched your life. Could it do the same for others? If so, please consider donating it to the NYU Libraries. The library welcomes gifts of books and materials that fall within the scope of its collecting activities. Gifts are reviewed with the same criteria as those used for purchasing new material. In both cases, the decision is based upon the demands, present and anticipated, of the University’s teaching and research programs.
Gifts of materials are accepted by the Libraries with the understanding that once received they are owned by NYU. The library reserves the right to determine their retention, cataloging treatment and other considerations related to their use or disposition. Only the Dean of Libraries or appointed designees may accept books on behalf of the Library.
We build our collections to support ongoing and new academic initiatives across the university. If you believe that your own collection of scholarly material and literature might fill in or enrich our holdings, we encourage you to contact us about making a gift.
Generally accepted materials include:
- Scholarly or rare items with research value that are in good physical condition
- Serious literary works
- Manuscripts, letters, and diaries
Materials generally not needed include:
- Outdated textbooks
- Popular magazines
- Paperback editions of current popular fiction
Areas of Interest
The Division of Libraries has retrospective needs within the general fields of history, literature (all languages), area studies (Latin America, Africa, Middle East, Slavic, East Asian, South Asian), classics, medieval studies, music, film, and performance. If you have collected in these areas and are interested in making a gift, please contact us; your material could fill an important gap in our holdings. In addition, we are always interested in unusual or specialized collections in any fields that match our faculty’s interests.

Other Ways to Help NYU Libraries
There are many ways to help NYU Libraries expand its collections. For instance, you can endow an acquisition fund in your name or as a tribute to someone else. Gifts can be structured in many ways. Your legacy, for example, can ensure that your giving continues long into the future. You can read about different types of gifts and their tax benefits, meet some of the people who have chosen to plan a gift, and contact the NYU gift planning office.
